Forest path on the Great Glen Way

The Great Glen Way

One of Scotland's Great Trails passes directly through Ancarraig. Step outside your lodge and onto 79 miles of spectacular Highland walking.

The Great Glen Way is a 79-mile coast-to-coast trail from Fort William to Inverness, following the Great Glen fault line through the heart of the Scottish Highlands. It passes ancient Caledonian pine forests, along the shores of Loch Ness, beside the Caledonian Canal, and through historic Highland villages.

The trail passes directly through Ancarraig property. Step outside your lodge, and within 2 minutes you're on one of Scotland's most scenic long-distance routes. You don't need to hike the entire 79 miles—beautiful sections are right on your doorstep, perfect for morning strolls or full-day adventures.

The path is well-maintained, clearly marked, and suitable for all abilities depending on which section you choose. Forest trails, lochside paths, and quiet country roads combine to create a classic Highland walking experience.

What to Expect

Well-maintained paths through mixed woodland, open moorland, and lochside sections. The terrain varies but is generally gentle—this isn't a mountain hike. Expect stunning Loch Ness views, peaceful forest sections where you might spot wildlife, and the occasional road crossing. The path is clearly marked with wooden waymarker posts. You'll share the trail with other walkers and occasional mountain bikers. Most sections are wide enough to walk side-by-side. Parts can be muddy after rain, especially through forested sections.
